So you have decided that you want to be a doctor. This is one of the most esteemed professions in the world today, as so many people vie for the respect being given to people whose name is preceded with the word Doctor. Medical schools are nothing like other schools out there; it takes a different kind of student to be able to master the various things that medical schools today have to dish out for people. It takes a special student to be able to complete medical school with the title of Doctor, yet there are so many medical schools out there to be able to choose from that can help you make that final impact with your degree. A prominent medical school vastly outweighs one that nobody has ever heard of, even though the schools may offer similar educations.
However, you have to apply to medical schools that you can afford to attend and that have some chance of accepting you as a student. Also, you should consider where you want to have your medical practice upon graduation, as local medical schools often have a better reputation among local hospitals and in the local communities. Also, you may get your education at a lesser cost if you attend a medical school in your state of residency. So, it is important to know what schools around where you live now may suit your needs and what schools near where you want to live upon graduation suit your needs.
Another important factor in your choice among medical schools is your own qualifications. If you were a marginal high school or college student without any claim to fame, you need not apply to ivy league schools. Apply to the best schools for which you have at least a 10% chance of acceptance. If you are a great student and you can get financing for your education, this would mean ivy league. But if you are a marginal student or you lack funds, this may mean a reputable state institution.
The school you go to is not going to determine whether or not you can practice medicine. It may, to some degree, affect how well you practice medicine. It will definitely affect your career opportunities throughout the rest of your life. But the most important part of choosing a medical school is that you choose one where you will be comfortable completing your medical degree. If you drop out of medical school, it won’t matter what school you attended. So find yourself the best medical school you can get yourself into and afford, but part of the equation has to be your comfort level at the school so that you will be successful at becoming a doctor.
